Gru group reading

The Gru group have been reading 'Running wild' by Michael Morpurgo. It's an interesting adventure story about a boy caught in the Indonesian tsunami. With the help of his friend Oona, (The elephant) he survives the initial tsunami before becoming lost in the jungle.

The boys have really enjoyed this story and then were asked to break the story into its main parts to retell the story. They created these amazing diorama's to show each part of the story.

At the start of the story we learn that Will has lost his father, a soldier in Iraq. In their grief, he and his mother go to stay with Will's grandparents. Will's mother decides that they need a break so books them flights to Indonesian for Christmas as a surprise for Will. Here is Michael's diorama showing Will on the plane looking out the window at the beaches.
As a special treat, Will's mum arranges for Will to go on an Elephant ride, as Will loves Elephants. At first Will is a little worried and Oona seems quiet and stubborn. All of a sudden Oona flees the beach, charging into the jungle with Will on her back. As they climb up a hill, Will turns back to see and hear the huge waves of the Tsunami hitting the beach where he and his mother just were. Here is Ali Zain's diorama showing the waves hitting the beach.

With only the clothes on his back, Oona and Will explore the jungle. Surviving on fruit and water they learn to communicate with each other. One day they come across a family of oragutans. They are friendly to Will and he meets the mothers and their babies.  It is at this point in the story that Will gets separated from Oona. This is Jeremiah's diorama of Will meeting the orangutans.

After months in the jungle, Will is captured by poaches led by Mister Anthony who are trying to smuggle the baby orangutans and sell the skins of tigers. After killing the mothers, the babies and Will are captured and kept in cages. Will is scared as the men keep threatening him. This is Torres Diorama showing Will's capture.

Will is held by the poachers for several days. While there he befriends the cook who only works for the poachers because he is scared of them.

After more than a year in the jungle, Will comes across Doctor Geraldine, a lone scientist who has devoted her life to the saving  the threatened orang-utans.  After locating Will's grandparents they come to visit him. He decides that he doesn't want to go back to England and instead chooses to stay in Indonesia with Dr Geraldine and help her to protect the orang-utans.  Here is Pratham's Diorama showing the end of the story with Will choosing to stay with Dr Geraldine.
